How Hospo is Giving Back to the Community
In the most challenging of circumstances, good news is always welcome so that we can hold onto hope for the future. It is also in these times that Australians best know how to band together and support the most vulnerable. It is in this spirit that many Melbourne hospo businesses, who are still fortunate to be open and running, are working to ease some of the stress of affected hospo workers by providing free meals, vouchers and an overall sense of comfort. Additionally, some are also providing free meals to frontline health workers, international students and anyone else doing it tough right now. We’ve noticed that a bunch of our favourite venues have been pitching in to do their bit to look after their community, and we wanted to share their good work so keep reading to findout more!
Open Kitchen by Congress Wine and Milieu Hospitality - Collingwood, Melbourne
Established by Milieu Hospitality with Congress Wine, Open Kitchen is a community service offering complimentary take home meals for two to hospitality professionals who have lost their jobs, had their hours dramatically reduced, or do not have access to Australian government support. Meals can be picked up from Milieu Hospitality’s Congress in Collingwood on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Clamms - Yarraville, Melbourne
Clamms has joined forces with their suppliers, friends and local chefs to provide 650 boxes of seafood and 550 serves of paella to hospo workers who have lost their jobs and are doing it tough due to COVID-19. The hampers change weekly depending on what produce and food supplies are available and will be given to affected hospitality workers for as long as possible. They are also offering home delivery and pickups from their Yarraville factory of their fresh seafood, platters and meal boxes.

Attica - Ripponlea, Melbourne
Attica’s Soup Project is providing free soup to hospitality workers on temporary visas who have lost their jobs or are struggling to make ends meet. They’re doing this by including a chicken broth on their menu (Tuesday to Saturday only) for $25, with $5 going towards making a different soup for these hospo workers. If you’re a supplier and have some surplus produce or products that you’d like to donate to be used in the soups or as an extra in the pack, email kylie@attica.com.au with the details. Rockpool Foundation Hope Delivery - Sydney and Melbourne
Rockpool’s Hope Delivery Service is making use of excess produce in their now closed Melbourne and Sydney restaurants, with a team of head chefs, restaurant managers and volunteers by preparing and distributing meals which are then collected by visa-holders or distributed by OzHarvest. The initiative aims to feed two thousand hospitality workers, homeless individuals and those doing it tough during the pandemic over the next six months in both Melbourne and Sydney.

Meals for Mates - Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland
$100,000 worth of vouchers are being made available to hospitality workers impacted by COVID-19, courtesy of wine and spirits maker Pernod Ricard. The limited vouchers worth $25 will be distributed via Deliveroo on a first come first served basis. Shop Bao Ngoc - Brunswick, Melbourne
Shop Bao Ngoc are offering a nightly, meat-free ‘keep the curve flat meal of the day’, available for contactless delivery within three kilometres of the venue. They are encouraging a donation (amount specified on their Facebook and Instagram posts) to pay for your own meal, or you may choose to pay it forward for those who can’t afford it. However, all these legends care about is that everyone gets a good feed, no one will be turned away for lack of funds!
