Singapore's Original Gin, Tanglin, Launches in Australia

Singapore Tanglin Gin

The Merlion, hawker markets and Crazy Rich Asians…Singapore is known for many things, but one thing that wouldn’t necessarily come to mind is gin. However, Tanglin is changing this perception in a huge way.

Operating since 2018, Tanglin is the creation of four Western expats living in Singapore – Tim Whitefield, Andy Hodgson, Charlie van Eeden and Chris Box – who one day realised that Singapore didn’t have a gin to call its own. Given Singapore’s vibrant history as a major trading port and having been a stop on the Spice Road route, it was surprising that this was the case. However, a surge of new hospitality businesses and a proliferation of bar and club openings made for the perfect opportunity for a homegrown gin spirit to flourish locally and abroad. Unashamedly packed with an unexpected combination of both Western and Eastern flavours that shows the potential of what gin can be, Tanglin is currently available in two expressions – Orchid Gin and Mandarin Chilli Gin. Having established themselves as Singapore’s first gin brand and distillery and pioneers of the country’s alcohol industry, Tanglin is now expanding their horizons and has landed in Australia, its first export market.

With Tanglin’s launch into Australia, we were excited to be given the opportunity to prepare not one, but two incredible events! The first was a media event hosted at Little Lon Distilling Co, a cosy venue perfect for getting to know Tanglin. Head Distiller, Tim Whitefield, was present to tell Tanglin’s story and introduce their flavour profiles and gin to guests, which included a host of writers, journalists and industry experts. As an extra treat, Tanglin flew in Singapore’s genius mixologist, George – the creative force behind Singaporean bars Spiffy Dapper and ‘Oriental Elixir’, who created some unique , one-night only’ Tanglin gin cocktails for guests to savour. These included an Orchid Gin and Calamansi Negroni and the Tanglin Rose, a concoction of Mandarin Chilli Gin, Soy Milk, Sugar Syrup and Rose Water.

The night following was a more festive occasion that gave influencers, media and friends of Tanglin the opportunity to taste their offerings, interact with the team and enjoy an epic two metre cheese board. Hosted at The Eighth Melbourne, guests were lured into the foyer by a trail of smoke and welcomed by a jungle of palms and the sweet scent of tropical flowers, before posing for a snap in front of a specially-made Tanglin photo wall and being served an Orchid Gin & Tonic. In the main room, DJ Small Fry set the mood with catchy tunes pumping while smiling waitstaff dressed in traditional cheongsams ensured that guests were well supplied with refreshments. Along with the bar staff, George worked his magic once again, offering Orchid Gin & Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonics, Orchid Gin Southsides, Mandarin Chilli Negronis and Mandarin Chilli Gimlets. As a sweet end to the night, guests were given Tanglin swag bags with samples of each gin and an exclusive Tanglin jigger to enjoy at home!
